Submission Guidelines

We are not accepting submissions at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Want an in-depth look at what we watch for in submissions? Check out our interview with Six Questions For…!

For general guidelines, see below.

We are looking for pieces about the South. Interpret this as you will, but just know that a piece about how great Ann Arbor is by someone from Chicago will not pass muster. Now a piece by someone from Kentucky talking about their transition to the cold Michigan winters? That’s something we want to read!

Most importantly: send us your best work! Send us whatever you think will make us laugh out loud, shed a few tears, or will make us feel like maybe the world isn’t such a bad place after all. Send us something that we’ll still be talking about hours later when we are rocking back and forth on our veranda, sipping a sweating glass of iced tea.

We accept works of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Poets may send up to three poems and prose must be between 400 – 2,000 words. Please include a cover letter and a brief bio with your submission. Presently we can only accept Microsoft Word doc (or docx) attachments. We accept submissions year-round and hope to respond to writers within 3 -4 months. We will respond to all submissions electronically. Accepted works will be published on a weekly basis, with only one genre produced each week.

Please email all submissions to ontheverandaliteraryjournal@gmail.com

Pssst…do you have an awesome photo of an awesome veranda? Send it our way and you just may see it in our next issue! Be sure to include the location of the veranda in your email.
